Family Tradition
One of my favorite holiday traditions with my family is putting on Christmas skits. For as long as I can remember, my cousins and I created and acted in a Christmas skit each Christmas Eve for our grandparents as entertainment before opening presents. Our skits always incorporated something about our grandparents or weird family quirks and had a healthy dose of humor. The best part about these skits was the priceless laughter and joy they created!
Keeping the Tradition Alive
As an adult and now parent, we are keeping this tradition alive with our kids. While they may be too young to fully write, act in, direct, and produce their own family improv skit, we are modifying the tradition to ensure they get take part in an experience we enjoyed so much as kids.
The last two years where we celebrated a covid-friendly Christmas, I wrote mini-children’s Christmas plays since we didn’t attend in-person Christmas service. Each play helped to teach something about Christmas. This year’s play I titled “The Magick of Christmas” and allowed them to understand what Jesus and Santa had to do with the holiday. This gave them the experience of performing in front of others, learning more about the spirit of the season, and as a bonus made their parents and grandparents burst with pride.
Incorporate Storytelling in Your Traditions
Whether you read a book to explain the holiday’s or write your own skits, I encourage you to incorporate storytelling into your family traditions. It’s a fun way to connect with, learn, and have fun over the holiday season!
